Gory greetings and welcome to a ghoriffic interview with a FANGtastic horror creator. I get very HEXcited when I meet a fellow woman of color in horror. Her work is TERRORIFFIC. Let's get into this fangtastic interview, shall we?
1.Tell us where you’re from and what you do.
I’m Maria Ortiz, originally from Brooklyn,NY. Professionally I'm a billing floor manager at one of the local clinics out here in Chicago. I am also the owner and founder of Golden Hook Designs where i create custom crochet dolls and much more.
2. How long have you been creating dolls?
I’ve been making dolls since 2017.
3. What started your career?
I first started to crochet as a replacement for smoke breaks since I was having a hard time to fill in the urge to smoke cigarettes .
4. Who/what/is your inspiration?
I get inspiration from everywhere , sometimes movies, client ideas, even some other crochet designers like Stephanie Pokorny (crochetverse) and Allison Hoffman (Crafty is Cool).
5. What is your specialty?
I specialize in horror dolls and heritage dolls
6.Which horror doll is your most requested?
The most requested horror doll is Pennywise and my version of the mini horrors.
7. What are some the challenges you’ve faced in your career and how did/do overcome that?
Most of my challenges come with time management issues. Trying to stay focus while your house is active since I also have 3 boys homeschooling. My way of trying to overcome these challenges is to do my creative work at night when I have peace and calm.
8. What is your most memorable project and why?
Personally my most memorable projects are my Memory Portrait Dolls ( which are dolls custom made to resemble the person who has passed away). My latest order was in memory of a father that had passed by covid and was an amputee. His daughter was so happy when she saw the doll of her father , when my work is appreciated is the best feeling to bring someone a little happiness.
9. What are some of your future plans for your business?
Future plans would be to expand more, I'm working on building inventory so I can do more pop shops. I would like to start designing patterns for others to recreate. Eventually I would love to get a store front out here in Chicago.
10. Name a few of your favorite horror films.
1) Evil Dead
5) night of the living dead
11. Who’s your favorite horror character?
12. If someone is interested in supporting you or finding out more about you where would they go?
